Eagle Day Report

Its all over for another year, and although it started a bit cool with an early shower of rain, it didn't stop the competitors and visitors from coming along. This year was of a high standard for the entries on the table and was a chance for BASE44 to catch up with some friendly faces. This event like all others is a great opportunity to meet more people and to discuss bases, modelling and to have a good time.

Thanks to all the organisers and hope to be there again in 2012.

Eagles Day 2011

Border Scale Model Show 2011

We were very happy to be a part of this event which took us to Wodonga on the Victorian / NSW border. This marked the 3rd Annual Scale Model Exhibition & Competition and was organised by the Border Scale Modellers club held over two days. There were a number of traders including Firestorm, Boomerang Models, Mouse House and Defence Models and Graphics. On the tables there were many categories containing a vast array of kits with lots to see for everyone.

I noticed a number of families coming through the doors which was great to see and was taken back by how friendly and interested people were in what was being displayed. The quality of builds was very high as was the level of organisation to put together this event.

BASE44 did very well and we are very lucky to have made some new contacts and to have met so many nice people. We hope to be at the next show and to take the opportunity to take in the sights of this beautiful area.

Here's a big thanks to Paul Powzyk from the Border Scale Modellers Club for asking us along, and to all those who came by our trade stand.

Border Scale Model Show - Albury Wodonga

Here are some images of my newest figure bases which are made using Pine and includes a mix of royal blue and dark green felt underlay. The dimensions are as follows:

I've been busy in the man shed and have created a new figure base. I have created a batch of 8 units to hone in the process and have only just applied the felt underlay. They have come up really nice and are in response to requests that I received at the recent Melbourne Model Expo. I will post a few pics over the weekend so stay tuned....................

Stunning Results for Base44

It turns out that some of our products contributed, although in a small way, to the success of several entries at this years Model Expo. For us, this is as good as it gets. Firstly to see some fantastic modelling earning a special placing. And secondly to see our bases being used to present the models to their very best. The photos below include first place holders in their respective categories and also special category awards. Well done and congratulations!

Trading at Melbourne Model Expo 2011

Sorry for the late follow up to this event but I have only just got myself together after all the excitement. I was very lucky to have a table in perhaps the best position which was right next the the entrance, offering easy access to the public. We did very well in sales and so I would like to thank all those who came by to look at and purchase our products. I would also like to thank the Expo organisers especially Jason Steinwedel for the opportunity to trade and for the kind words and motivation to be a part of this Model Expo.

It was great to see that there were many competition models that are using our bases. To see our products our there is a real buzz and is a great motivator to keep going with what we are doing.

Its all over for another year and I would love to be there again for 2012. I have always been a competitor or a member of the public and this was my first time as a trader with a table. This was a real experience and I dont know how I managed to survive for three days, but I did, and would not have been possible without the assistance and support of my wife Robyn and son Luke and my mate Andrew Taylor, so here's a huge thanks to you all.

Red Gum Shortage

Whilst purchasing some timber from my supplier I was told that there are significant shortages of Red Gum. In 2010 some of the major Red Gum timber mills began to close their doors due to the creation of national parks by the Victorian an NSW government's. The effect of this is still continuing with the supply slowing down, and BASE44 not being able to create wider Red Gum bases. It appears that there is still plenty of smaller sizes available from the suppliers, but this may not last to long into the future.

Hopefully the supply of this beautiful timber will be more widely available soon, so I will keep an eye on this and keep you up to date.

Model Expo 2011

This is a huge event with so much to see including models across many categories and traders selling their wares. This event is a must for the modeller of all levels, and is a great place to take the family for a fun, interesting and informative day.

Wheels and Tracks 2011

BASE44 traded today at the Wheels and Tracks 2011 model competition, and was the most successful show for us so far. I would like to thank all those who came by to look at and to purchase our bases. Thanks also to the organisers for putting on a great show which I believe was also a success in terms of people through the doors and with the number of traders.

Display Table - SA Model Expo 2010

The SA Model Expo 2010 has been and gone and although the weather was not the best to venture out of doors, it was a lot of fun. The BASE44 trade stand was setup in record time with help from my wife and son, and was ready to go for the overall event. There was a lot to see with what was to become the most successful show in its 28 year history. There were a record number of entries, and as I was told also a record number of judges which made light work of the difficult task of judging the various categories. I was one of those judges and was lucky enough to partner up with Firestorms David Hayes who is a brilliant figure modeller, and learnt a few tricks in the process which was a lot of fun.

I would like to thank John Kerr and all those who helped to put together a great event, and for giving BASE44 an opportunity to be present. A special thanks goes out to my family who came along to share the excitement and dramas of being a trader, judge and competitor. Although it is a long trip from Victoria, it is well worth the effort and one to mark down on your calendar.

Display Table - Eagles Day 2010

Today was a great day with the weather being perfect and an opportunity to bring some BASE44 products to the trade stand. I mainly brought a range of stock to cover aircraft as this is an aircraft related event. I actually found that people were asking for bases across various modeling categories, such as ships and cars. So I think to cover my bases (pardon the pun) I will make a point to bring all my stock whatever the event. As a trader the day was steady including a lot of interest and future orders in the pipe line.

I would like to thank all those who came by my trade stand to purchase and to ask questions. I would also like to thank the organisers and especially Keith Gaff for asking me along for the day, and I do hope to be there again next year.

Getting ready for Eagles Day - Sunday 24th Oct 2010

Not long now until Axis Eagles together with IPMS Australia host their annual Eagles Day model competition. This will be the first time BASE44 has traded at this show, so I very much look forward to making some stock available. This event is geared towards aircraft and aviation related models and although I am an armour modeler I can say that it is a most enjoyable event.

Its been a slow process in getting enough stock together to sell at modeling events. The first sales were made possible with great thanks to Peter and Lisa Bibby of South Eastern Hobbies, who kindly sold my stock as part of their trade stand at the Melbourne Model Expo in 2009 and 2010. BASE44 first went solo at Wheels & Tracks 2010 and was warmly received by many people with some very positive results. We hope to continue making and selling model bases and are open to idea's and suggestions to make this area of modeling successful.

Diorama is built around an anti-tank gun emplacement sometime during the later stages of 1944. Kits used include a resin Rheinmetal PAK 44 by Cromwell Models and Alpine figure sets - LAH Officers Kharkov (35059) and SS Oficers LAH Kharkov (35065).

This is the Dragon Tiger I Late Production 3-in-1 kit which has had much of the external fittings removed to represent the Vimoutiers Tiger, which is currently on public display in France. Also included is a MIG Productions WW2 Russian Hooligan figure painted exclusively with oils.

This diorama features the Dragon Panther F depicted in March 1946 (what if) which includes Griffon rear deck armour shields and night vision, Aber photo etch set and Friulmodel tracks. The ground work including the railway platform were scratch built with the inclusion of a MIG street light and Dragon railway track.
